- Cook pasta according to package directions in a large pot of salted boiling water. Reserve about 1/2 cup of pasta water before draining.
- While pasta cooks, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add minced garlic and red pepper flakes (if using); cook 1 minute until fragrant. Don't burn the garlic!
- Add crushed tomatoes, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Bring to a simmer and cook 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.
- Add the drained pasta to the skillet with the sauce. Toss to coat. Add reserved pasta water if the sauce is too thick.
- Remove from heat. Stir in Parmesan cheese and butter. The pasta's heat will melt the butter, creating a creamy sauce.
- Garnish with fresh basil (if using) and serve immediately.
Notes
Feel free to add other vegetables like spinach, mushrooms, or cherry tomatoes to this recipe. You can also experiment with different cheeses or herbs. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
