- Wash oranges thoroughly and slice into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Try to keep slices uniform.
- In a medium saucepan, combine sugar and water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes.
- Add orange slices to the simmering syrup, ensuring they are mostly submerged. Simmer gently for 1 hour, or until translucent and tender, turning occasionally.
- Remove orange slices with a slotted spoon and place on a wire rack to cool completely (4-6 hours or overnight).
- Melt chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth. Alternatively, melt in a double boiler.
- Dip each dried orange slice halfway or completely into the melted chocolate. Place back on the wire rack to set. Sprinkle with sea salt (optional) before chocolate sets.
- Once the chocolate has hardened, store candied orange slices in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
Notes
For a richer flavor, use dark chocolate. You can also experiment with different types of sprinkles or chopped nuts for decoration.
