Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9-inch pie plate.
- In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat.
- Pour apple mixture into prepared pie plate. Dot the top with 1 tablespoon of butter pieces.
- In a separate bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Sprinkle crumble topping evenly over the apple filling.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until topping is golden brown and apples are tender. If topping browns too quickly, cover edges with aluminum foil.
- Let cool completely on a wire rack before serving. Serve warm or at room temperature with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (optional).
Notes
For a richer flavor, use a combination of apple varieties like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp. You can also add a sprinkle of coarse sugar over the crumble topping before baking for extra crunch.
