Filling Ingredients
  • 6 medium Granny Smith apples peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 0.5 cup Granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cup Packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon Butter cut into small pieces
Crumble Topping Ingredients
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup Rolled oats
  • 0.5 cup Packed light brown sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 cup Cold unsalted butter cut into small pieces

Equipment

  • 9-inch pie plate
  • Large bowl
  • Pastry blender or fork

Method

Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9-inch pie plate.
  2. In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat.
  3. Pour apple mixture into prepared pie plate. Dot the top with 1 tablespoon of butter pieces.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Sprinkle crumble topping evenly over the apple filling.
  6. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until topping is golden brown and apples are tender. If topping browns too quickly, cover edges with aluminum foil.
  7. Let cool completely on a wire rack before serving. Serve warm or at room temperature with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (optional).

Notes

For a richer flavor, use a combination of apple varieties like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp. You can also add a sprinkle of coarse sugar over the crumble topping before baking for extra crunch.
